Mysterious sweet syrup smell wafts over Manhattan again

It's back!
That sweet smell that wafted over the city a few years ago - desribed as maple syrup, french toast, pancakes and even coffee cake - is in the air again, city officials said.
The city's 311 system received about 35 calls on Monday from 9 p.m. to midnight, as callers reported the mysterious scent wafting through parts of upper Manhattan and Queens.
The city Department of Environmental Protection sent inspectors to the areas to conduct air tests.
They confirmed the scent but the source of the smell was still unknown, officials said. The strange odor first hit the city and nearby New Jersey in 2005.
At the time, Mayor Bloomberg said a slew of agencies - the NYPD, the Office of Emergency Management and the Health Department - investigated the scent and found nothing toxic or terrorism links. Read comments on the subject from Gothamist.com viewers here
