He has a record-setting 13 nominations going into tomorrow’s Billboard Latin Music Awards in Miami for the platinum-selling album "Te Quiero."
The nods follow up closely on last month’s win for Best Urban Song in the Premios Lo Nuestro for the hit single "Te Quiero," a bouncy, squeaky-clean mid-tempo reggae tune that has been all over radio and nightclub play in the past year.
"Success has come fast; fans have really taken up the song quickly," said Flex, 28, on the phone from Miami. "But I’ve been doing this for 11 years, and it’s been tough to arrive to this point."
And for most of those years, he wasn’t even known as Flex but as Nigga, a racially-loaded name that would have thwarted his U.S. prospects.
