NYT: Gifted programs for Kindergarten expanding, but blacks and latino student numbers still low

Gifted Kindergarten Programs Expand
By Elissa Gootman

The number of children qualifying for New York City’s public school gifted kindergarten programs rose by 45 percent this year, Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein announced Monday. The gains were fueled by a 19 percent – or 2,412-student – rise in the number of test-takers, to 14,822.

In response to the rising numbers, the chancellor said that the city would open as many as 24 new district gifted programs in September. The city would also create as many as 150 new kindergarten seats in the more selective citywide gifted programs, for which 1,345 qualified, up from 1,026 last year.
