An American Airlines MD-83 flight from Saint Louis, Missouri enroute to Los Angeles, California suffered a bird strike to it's right engine shortly after takeoff this evening and was forced to make an emergency landing back at the St. Louis Airport.

Flight 449 was carrying 140 passengers and five crew members when the strike was felt by the flight's captain. The airplane levelled off at 3,000 feet, shut the damaged engine down and returned to the St. Louis airport within minutes of taking off. The flight landed safely and there have been no injuries reported at this time.
