Seventeen years ago, Mary Jo Buttafuoco was shot in the head by her husband's underage lover.
Left with one deaf ear and a partially paralyzed face, Mary Joe stood stoically by her man, Joey, even when he was sentenced to prison for having sex with 16-year-old Amy Fisher.
Over the past 12 years, Joey Buttafuoco has been fined for prostitution charges, illegal possession of ammunition, and auto insurance fraud. Mary Jo finally divorced him in 2003.

In her new book, "Getting it Through My Thick Skull: Why I stayed, What I Learned, and What Millions of People Involved with Sociopaths Need to Know" (Health Publications Inc.), Buttafuoco admits she spent the majority of her life in thrall of a sociopath."If I had known then what I know now I would have gotten out years and years ago," said Buttafuoco. "The key element in the life of any sociopath is a willing partner.
"So how do you spot a sociopath?In an interview, Buttafuoco culled the pages of the New York Post and helped us separate the true sociopaths from run-of-the-mill scumbags.

Classic Examples of Sociopaths and Narcissists
1.) Ponzi schemer Bernie Madoff: "He is the classic example," she said. "He could rob and steal and lie with no sense of conscious or guilt. Ruth was fooled and her children were fooled. They should all walk away and cut their losses. He'll never have remorse and he doesn't care that he's in jail. Sociopaths weld to whatever environment they're in."

2.) Conman Rafaello Follieri: "He is absolutely a sociopath. Sociopaths depend on willing partners like Anne Hathaway to get away with their deception. They're skilled at exploiting and manipulating others. There's never any remorse over what they've done. You can't expect anything of sociopaths and you can never ask them for anything."

3.) Love Guv Eliot Spitzer: "He's just a cheater and a narcissist, but he's not a sociopath."

4.) Cat Killer Joseph Petchka: "That's just crazy. He's a psychopath but not a sociopath. With sociopaths it's all about manipulation. It's a social thing."

5.) "Preppy Killer" Robert Chambers: "He's like OJ Simpson and Scott Peterson--they're on the high end of sociopath, when they become murderers. The low end will just rob and steal from you. Chambers never had any remorse, it was never his fault. That is classic sociopath behavior."
