In the immediate hours after the worst earthquake to hit a Caribbean nation in over 20 years came to the attention of the world, multi-platinum music artist and producer Wyclef Jean took to the television airwaves to push for immediate aid for his countrymen in Haiti.

Wyclef, who resides in Saddle River, N.J., is native of Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti a northern suburb of the capital city, Port-Au-Prince. In 2004, Jean, along with cousin Jerry 'Wonder' Duplessis and humanitarian experts Sanjay Rawal and Natabara Rollosson, created a non-political organization called Yéle Haiti.

Jean said his vision was to provide humanitarian aid to Haiti; to empower his people and the Haitian Diaspora to have hope as they rebuild and restore pride across Haiti.
According to his publicist, Jean boarded an early morning flight for the Dominican Republic early Wednesday morning headed for Haiti in order to lend aid to fellow Haitians as they awoke to a city in ruins.

This afternoon, he tweets as he walks the streets of a
city he called home until he was nine years old:

4 minutes ago Wyclef Jean asked that we retweet (RT) @BarackObama: Today, our thoughts and prayers r w/the people of Haiti. Learn about relief efforts and how you can help. 4 minutes ago from web

His second tweet since arriving in country came six minutes later: Wyclef Jean wrote:

WARRIORS HAITI NEEDS U NOW! PLEASE LEND YOUR PRAYERS AND SUPPORT TO THE EARTHQUAKE RELIEF EFFORT TEXT "YELE" TO 501 501 OR VISIT YELE.ORG 6 minutes ago from web

Jean is most famously known for being a member of the 1990's multi-platinum, Grammy Award winning hip hop trio, The Fugees. His humanitarian efforts didn't begin with last night's catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake and it certainly won't end there.

Jean, who became a roving ambassador for Haiti in 2007, will only use this event as a tool to heighten the awareness of Haitian Americans living in the U.S. and others who are able to aid him in his efforts to rebuild one of the poorest nations in the world.

Jean's followers list at Twitter was largeBoldto begin with, but after his plea on CNN last night to send aid through his Yele Haiti organization, hundreds of twittermen began following him and re-tweeting his messages for immediate aid for those affected by the earthquake and a new movement was born. Twitter was covered with so many retweets of Jean's message to contact his Yéle charity that the site crashed under the heavy traffic.

The singer is urging everyone to send a text to his Yéle Haiti charity and donate $5 to the ravaged Caribbean nation. The number is 501501 and you will be charged $5 for texting the number. Visit Jean's organization, Yéle Haiti to see how you can help.
