The U.S. Geological Survey has just announced two powerful aftershocks to hit Chile again, the strongest registering a 7.2 magnitude.
The aftershock, which struck minutes before the inauguration of president-elect Sebastian Pinera, hit 125 kilometres west-southwest of Santiago and measured at a depth of 10 km. The first aftershock registered at a magnitude of 5.2.
Chile issued a tsunami warning today after the aftershocks rocked the South American country.
The aftershocks disrupted President-elect Pinera's inauguration ceremony which had began in Valparaiso moments before attendees began feeling the shaking.
The aftershocks follow the monstrous 8.8 quake that struck just off Chile's coast February 27 causing billions of dollars in damage and the deaths of hundreds. The tsunami that followed obliterated half a million homes as it whipped Chile's coastline cities.
Chile has estimates overall repairs for rebuilding the city will likely exceed $15 billion. Stay tuned for updates on this breaking news story.
