Former Defensive Lineman Merlin Olsen Loses Battle with Cancer

Los Angeles Rams former defensive lineman, Merlin Olsen has died after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 69.

Olsen starred on the "Little House on the Prairie" as gentle giant Jonathan Garvey alongside actor Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert from 1977 to 1981. Immediately following his “Prairie” role, Olsen landed the lead role in "Father Murphy" from 1981 to 1983.

The stocky defensive lineman was an imposing figure standing at 6-foot-five and weighing 270 pounds. He was inducted into Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1982.

The actor graduated summa cum laude in 1962 from Utah State University with a master’s degree in economics. He was a member of the fraternity Phi Kappa Phi.


Sporting the number 71 football jersey throughout his tenure with Rams from 1962 through 1976, Olsen was a member of the Rams’ "Fearsome Foursome" line with Roosevelt “Rosie” Grier, Lamar Lundy and Deacon Jones.
