Deputy Coroner says overdose cannot be ruled out at this time
The Los Angeles County Coroner's office released a preliminary finding in the death of actor Corey Haim.
Haim suffered from an enlarged heart and he had fluid in his lungs, but the exact cause of his death is unknown as doctor's await toxicology reports which are six weeks away.
Los Angeles County Deputy Coroner Ed Winter told CNN "There were some preliminary findings, and we agreed to let the mother know what those were," said Winter.
"It was explained to her that even though this is some preliminary findings that the doctor observed, there wouldn't be a final cause of death until the final toxicology tests are back."
Haim's manager, Mark Heaslip, told the media that the coroner's office telephoned Haim's mother stating that the autopsy revealed her son had an enlarged heart and that pulmonary congestion was believed to have caused Haim's death. Heaslip added that these results indicated that Haim's death was not due to a drug overdose.
However, Deputy Coroner Winter contradicted Heaslip's statement during an interview with CNN Friday.
"You can have somebody with an enlarged heart and some other medical conditions, but you don't know if the actual cause of death is from illegal substances, medication or heart failure," said Los Angeles County Deputy Coroner Ed Winter.
Reports say Haim picked up prescriptions for the muscle relaxer Soma and the narcotic pain reliever Norco from a pharmacy February 26 -- 11 days before his death.
The 38-year-old teen actor who starred in movies "License to Drive," "Lost Boys" and "First Born" died Wednesday after collapsing in his mother's Los Angeles apartment.
