The mother of a woman who once dated Mbarel Lafrem told the New York Post that she "wasn't surprised," but refused to give her name or give any insight into why the relationship between her daughter and Lafrem ended.
During questioning by the NYPD, Lafrem told the Special Victims Unit Detectives that he beat the young pediatric nurse mercilessly that night because she began "yelling and berating" him when he walked into the women's bathroom after rejecting his request to dance earlier that evening.
He broke her eye socket and jaw, fractured her skull and tried to rape her because he followed her off the dance floor and into the women's bathroom...and she yelled at him. Lafrem is blaming his victim for her own victimization.
"I was at the bar with the girl. I went into the bathroom, and she started yelling at me," Lafrem to police.
"She was coming toward me, so I grabbed her by the arm. She was trying to push me, so I punched her in the face twice and pushed her back into the stall. She fell into the stall and hit her head."
At his arraignment, his charges were upgraded to attempted murder and prosecutors added attempted rape.
The Philadelphia construction worker, who is a native of Morocco, was turned in by fellow construction workers who recognized Lafrem from the NYPD video footage.
Su Lim, manager of the Green Emporium Bodega on Eight Avenue said Lafrem entered his Hell's Kitchen Bodega around 9:00 p.m. the night of the attack and became argumentative with Lim.
The manager called the police, but Lafrem left returning around 11:00 p.m. where he bought a beer then stole energy drinks as he left. This was approximately three hours prior to his attack on the nurse
Lafrem, who is being held without bail, lived at the Best Western motel on 48th Street which was near the pub where he assaulted the young woman.
