Paterson, New Jersey - He had a bright future ahead of him but those dreams were dashed by a stream of bullets early Saturday morning in Patterson.

Javon Kemp, 17, had a hard knock life, but had made a huge turnaround recently, according to his mother Nadine Alexander.

His grades along with his attitude had changed significantly as he began to see his future take shape in a positive form with his recent applications to college. His mother described him as a people person.

On Friday night, Kemp asked his mother for some money and said he was meeting friends for dinner and an evening out before leaving his Marion Avenue home around 9:30 p.m.
Hours later, Kemp was dead.

Kemp had been shot multiple times sometime after 2:30 a.m. as he and his older brother walked along 12th Avenue in a neighborhood known for trouble. Alexander became aware of her son's death after she received a call from her oldest son saying Kemp had been shot and killed.

Paterson police are searching for a suspect and a motive in the senseless murder.

"There was no argument" before the shooting, said Detective Sgt. Pablo Maute. The brothers "were just hanging out and walking around."

Bonnie Miele, the principal of Panther Academy, said Kemp was a student at PANTHER Academy, a math and science school and was remembered as a "likable kid" with an "impish smile and a good sense of humor," said principal Bonnie Miele.
Miele said that while Kemp was an "average student" he had begun showing improvement as he struggled to stay on the right path.

"When you looked at him you saw a lot of good in him, but it was a struggle for him," she said. "His mother was very supportive in trying to help him out, but sometimes you can be with them 23.5 hours a day, and that half hour you're not with them, something could happen."

Donning laminated necklaces bearing a photo of a smiling Kemp, family members and friends assembled on the stoop of Kemp's mother's home Sunday as they shared a recalled how Kemp loved basketball, shopping and could make people laugh.

Police continue to investigate the shooting.
