A Brooklyn man cried crime of passion so well, he fooled seasoned NYPD detectives initially, but a voice-mail and several hours of video surveillance completely contradicted his story. What police ended up learning led to the tale-spinner's arrest for plain murder.
A crime of passion refers to a crime in which the perpetrator suddenly reacts in a jealous rage and commits a crime of murder or assault. In the case of John Brandon, 50, it was simply cold-blooded murder that led police to arrest him at the Brownsville apartment of his girlfriend, 51-year-old Deborah Blount.
Brandon told 73rd Precinct detectives that he killed Blount and two of her alleged lovers after he caught the trio in bed together. He claimed that in a hasty fit of jealousy and rage, he killed Blount then chopped up the bodies of the two men and dumped their remains in New Jersey.
Police say it was simply an elaborate wolf tale to try and justify murdering his girlfriend. Thus far, police have one body and no evidence at this time that there are any others.
"We've looked at almost 48 hours of surveillance tape, and the only images we have are of the two of them (Blount and Brandon) going into the apartment," said NYPD spokesman Paul Browne.
When Police arrived at Blount's apartment, they found her lying in a pool of blood. They were led to the apartment after listening to a voicemail Brandon left for a friend saying he had killed Blount and two men.
Brandon, who the police found waiting for them when they arrived around 8:30 a.m. Friday, was known to neighbors who said he spent several nights a week at Blount's apartment. One neighbor, Luemay Facey, told police she heard a woman screaming for help early Friday morning, but thought nothing of it.
"I screamed out the window for them to shut up," said Facey.
"I heard a lot of screaming and dogs barking Friday night, but I just went back to sleep. It went on for five minutes and then it stopped."
After being questioned by police, Facey said, "It dawned on me this morning that maybe I should have called the cops," she said. "I didn't take it seriously. Now I don't know what to think."
Neighbors said they saw Blount and Brandon in the building hallway around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, but did not report that they were arguing.
