Before we get started I need to tell you that I am not an official spokesman for my department, and my opinions in no way reflect the policies or positions of my department...or probably any other law enforcement entity for that matter. So, who am I? I'm a detective sergeant in a suburban police department, and I've been doing this job for 20 years. I might mention the name of the department I work for when I know you better. I'm a father, and husband, and I've been married a few years longer than I've been on the job. Of the 20 years I've worked for my department, I've spent 15 in investigations. I've worked as a patrol officer, evidence technician, detective, youth officer, patrol sergeant and detective sergeant. I served on a homicide task force for nearly 3 years before I got promoted to sergeant. Right now I wear a few different hats.
In addition to being a detective supervisor I'm also a firearms instructor and I've been a use of force trainer for more than 10 years. One of the things I'm proudest of is my participation in our department's honor guard. Years ago my kids suggested starting a blog, knowing how much I liked to tell stories and just generally spout off. So here I am. You can follow me on Twitter @JoeTheCop. My goal with Arresting Tales is to give you a glimpse into aspects of police work that you might not get otherwise. I'll be commenting on stories in the news, and telling a few stories of my own. I hope you find it interesting.
