Attempted Prison Escape Leaves 2 Marines Dead in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan — Two Marines were killed during an attempted prisoner escape this weekend in southern Afghanistan. NATO said Monday that the Marines died while trying to subdue a prisoner who had escaped from a room where he was observing prayers. The prisoner acquired a rifle and shot at Afghan and coalition forces.

While it is unclear if this Marine was one of the two casualties, the Defense Department on Monday announced the death of Cpl. Max W. Donahue, 23, a member of Camp Pendleton’s I Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group.
