A Carlsbad, California Sheriff's Deputy is recuperating at home following a three-car collision Friday morning that injured the drivers of the other two cars as well as the officer. All three were treated for their injuries at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido and released.
The early morning crash near the Rancho Santa Fe Road and La Costa Avenue intersection forced the San Diego County Sheriff's Department to close Rancho Santa Fe Road. Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash and none of the drivers have been cited or charged.
According to a report by the Carlsbad Police Department, the accident occurred as the two civilian drivers were traveling northbound and went to make a left turn onto La Costa Avenue, westbound. The unmarked police car belonging to deputy Dustin Lopez was traveling south on Rancho Santa Fe Road when all three collided. Investigators are trying to determine which of the drivers or Lopez had the green light.
Lopez, a San Marcos Sheriff's Station deputy, was not in pursuit at the time of the crash. Traffic investigators from the Carlsbad Police Department continue to investigate the crash.
