A 32-year-old Sunflower Market employee in Albuquerque, New Mexico pleaded guilty last week to tainting a cup of yogurt with his semen in January.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales called Anthony Garcia's conduct "sickening and appalling" after the guilty plea in federal court Thursday. During the allocution phase of the hearing, Garcia admitted
he placed his semen in a cup of yogurt and on a spoon then approached a female customer who was sampling food at the grocery store and gave her the adulterated sample.
"No one should have to endure this type of experience simply because she or he accepts a food sample while shopping for groceries," said Gonzales.
The victim told police the sample tasted suspect so she spit it out on to the floor after the first taste, then wiped her mouth on the clothes she was wearing to get the taste out of her mouth. After his arrest, Garcia lied to police about what he did, but a DNA sample linked the twisted employee to the semen laced yogurt remnant police collected from the victim's spit and the garment she was wearing.
Garcia, who pleaded guilty to adulterating food and making false statements to federal investigators,
faces up to three years in prison and three years of supervised release when he is sentenced. Garcia remains in federal detention, where he has been since his arrest in July. Prosecutors have not released a date for sentencing.
