PC Doesn't Stop At Halloween

Commentary by Alicia Cruz
The Black Urban Times

As the article below will indicate,  being politically correct doesn't stop at Halloween, folks. He's right, if "Alice in Wonderland" and "Cinderella" costumes did not initially don fishnet stockings, peek-a-boo bootie skirts and cleavage bearing tops...why should you? If you want to be all-out sexy, go for a Madonna, Lil' Kim or an Ice T's wife get-up.

And please, if the costume is three sizes too small, don't wear it. Halloween is no excuse to make a fool of ourselves. Journalist, Naima Ramos-Chapman pointed out how disrespectful and inappropriate it is for a grown woman to dress as a little girl wearing the fishnets, boob bearing tight shirts, 5-in heels, etc  "because it sends two disturbing messages that use sex as a vehicle to reinforce patriarchal hierarchies through the infantilization of adult women and condoning male fantasies about sex with underage prepubescent girls."

The man makes an excellent point when you think about it.

The same goes for dressing your little girl up as a hooker or a grown woman. Yes, it's Halloween, but think about the message your sending to the many pervs I'm sure are crawling the streets on All Hallows Night. Prostitution may be legal in some states (and countries) but it's still wrong and denigrates women. On that note, sending any message indicating that it is cute to make a child look like a sexy adult is just simply poor parenting. Need I remind the world of how disgusted we all were about the Jon Benet Ramsey case??

Have a safe and wonderful Halloween and don't forget to adhere to safety tips for your little trick or treaters.

Chuck the Indian garb. Just like blackface, redface is just as offensive. I made the mistake once of going as a nondescript Native American years ago and the only thing that saved me from complete impropriety was my Apache-ness on my father's side....but then what the hell was I going to a Halloween party dressed as a dated and horribly inaccurate representation of "myself?" Epic Fail.....MORE
