New Political Editor- Valerie Coverdale joins The Black Urban Times

Hello Black Urban Times readers. I am Valerie Lin Coverdale and I have been invited to write on this site my views on the politics of race and gender. I have been passionate about these matters for much of my life. My Parents parents were politically involved and since I was a child of theirs, my involvement in such matters were of consequence.

My grandfather was a dynamic man, serving in the Democratic Convention in the late 60's, he participated also in the desegregation of the Army Grandpa Gibson was involved in the Geneva conferences, too My parents were involved in Operation Push with Jackson. My family and I moved to Berkeley, California mid-seventies and was exposed to radical politics. I was influenced to protest by both parents. Political and intellectual pursuits were a must on my household.

I was exposed to much "outside the box" thinking. Some of my writing may infuriate people. This is not the purpose. It is meant to get people to think outside mental boxes. And hopefully, your responses to my writing will do the same for me.

Current on my mind are books written by men that express how women should behave. I will write extensively on this. Some of my writing will be on politics 101. I am committed to the Constitution now. Much talk in politics is over what is constitutional and what is not. And small bits and pieces about how political structure is set up. Other random topics are certain to pop up, too.

I question how we "black" people view these matters. To be Black encompasses much. Jewish people may be of many races but  Jewish in culture if not religion.  Black people, on the other hand, are of similar diaspora but not religion or values. We have much variety and thought within our group, including Jewish people.

So, here I am, Valerie Lin Coverdale, writing in an attempt to engage you in your own cognitive process. I invite replies as tempered as you like. For in real discourse comes forth growth. Let's get ready to step out of our comfort zones and cardboard box thinking.

Hello again and thank you Black Urban Times for allowing me to contribute my writing to your wonderful on-line publication.
