This is my list of trends I would like to see no more of in the New Year. Not all of these came about in 2012, nevertheless I would love to (but probably won't) see them exit stage left in 2013.
1. Hoof heel shoes - These are some scary ass shoes. Scary both because 1) walking in them looks like it should be an act in the circus, and 2) people are unsure if the wearer is a human or a centaur.
2. Bat wing lashes - Yes, bat wings. Geisha fans. You know, those HUGE fake eyelashes made popular by Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga and drag queens everywhere. Ladies, they look ridiculous. There are plenty of cute, natural-looking eyelash extensions and strips available. Let's stick to those, please. Leave the Snufalufagus lashes behind.
3. Lace front wigs - I think we can all agree that these horrible-looking things were never a good idea in the first place.
4. Undeserved fame - I'm talking about people with no talent becoming overnight celebrities for no reason whatsoever. (Kim Kardashian, Amber Rose, reality show stars.) Which leads me into #5.
5. Ratchet reality shows - I am clearly in the minority on this as one of the few that does not tune in weekly to see the latest catfights of hip-hop housewives, NBA exes, football girlfriends and whatever else VH1 and Oxygen are offering these days. Unfortunately, with D4L rapper Shawty Lo's "All my Babies' Mamas" slated to air in the upcoming year, it has already been made obvious that the trend isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
6. Duck lips - This really requires no explanation because everyone has seen them and knows exactly what they are. So can we stop it? Now? Please?
7. Artists mass spamming music on Twitter and Facebook - Look, I know you feel you have a really great song, video or album, but seriously…do you think anyone actually visits your link to take a listen? It's cool if I know you personally; I will surely check it out! But otherwise, you're just wasting your time and space on my page. A better alternative would be to compile an e-mail list of all your fans, supporters and people you know are interested in your music, and send e-mail blasts to these contacts. Focus on targeting people you know will listen, rather than spamming 1,000 people and hoping for a few clicks.
8. The partially shaven head - These hairstyles have been rocked by celebs from Rihanna to Cassie. But is there really anything attractive or stylish about looking like you've just had a brain operation? I think not.
9. Uggs - The Ugg boot trend should have died a long time ago, but somehow it's still going strong. It has gotten so bad the heeled Timberlands have been forced to make a re-appearance. Lawd have mercy...
10. Stiletto nails - I admit I, myself, am guilty of participating in the stiletto nail trend. At one time I thought the long, pointy cat claws were cute. I have since come to my senses and hope others will too before someone loses an eye.
Now, if you are mad at me, that's okay :) These are just my personal opinions and I am in no way claiming to be an expert on any of this stuff. I'm now going to leave you all with a brief list of some of the trends I'm enjoying and actually hope will stick around.
1. Textured nail designs (velvet, caviar, studded, etc.) - Ladies, we have so many options for our nails today. I remember when all we had were French manicures, rhinestones and airbrush designs.
2. Intellectual rappers - Yes, hip-hop artists that are actually saying something. They do exist! Lupe Fiasco, Eshon Burgandy, J. Cole, Lecrae and Kendrick Lamar are just a few.
3. French braids - Can't get enough of these classy hairstyles and the dope ways people pull them off.
4. Leggings - Damn what you say. They are way too comfortable to leave my closet yet.
5. Sneaker wedges - Again, cute and comfy.
Happy New Year everyone! Best wishes for an awesome and productive 2013!
