A man Essex County investigators say is responsible for the armed robbery and car theft of a Newark man was found guilty of all charges by a jury of his peers last week.
Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray issued a press release stating Jamil Kollie, of Newark was found guilty of first degree robbery and weapons offenses.
Murray said that in January 2011, the victim was robbed at gunpoint by Kollie on the corner of Schley Street and Chancellor Avenue. At the time, the victim only had $12 in his pocket.
On January 19, 2011, Kollie pointed a gun at a man on the corner of Schley Street and Chancellor Avenue in Newark and demanded his money.
Angry that the victim had only $12 at the time, Kollie told the victim that he would "shoot his knees off" if didn't get more money. Frightened, the man went into a nearby convenience store to withdraw money from the ATM machine.
Kollie demanded that he hold the man's car keys and told him that if he did not return with the cash, he would take the victim's vehicle.
Once inside the store, the victim used his cell phone to call 911. While talking to 911, Kollie fled the scene in the victim’s car with an unidentified male as the driver. The victim was not injured during the robbery.
The jury deliberated four hours before returning their guilty verdict against Kollie.
Assistant Prosecutor Brian Matthews, who tried the case, said that while the defendant was a juvenile when he committed the robbery, he was tried as an adult because of the seriousness of the crime.
Matthews added that the conviction served as a clear indication that "This sort of conduct will not be tolerated. The guilty verdict also provides a measure of peace to the victim," said Matthews.
Judge Michael L. Ravin set Kollie's sentencing date for January 25, 2013.
