A member of the elite SEAL Team Six, the unit responsible for killing Osama bin Laden earlier this year, died of injuries he sustained during a risky attempt to free an American doctor taken hostage by Taliban members.
The raid, ordered by General John Allen, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, began after military officials received intelligence indicating that hostage, Dr. Dilip Joseph was "In imminent danger of injury or death", a military press release read.
According to Yahoo.com, Joseph and two colleagues were kidnapped Dec. 5 when they returned from eastern Kabul where they visited a medical clinic. The three men were later being held in a mountainous area approximately 50 miles from the Pakistan border.
President Obama, who praised the Special Operations force for their bravery, issued a statement today saying, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, just as we must always honor our troops and military families. He gave his life for his fellow Americans, and he and his teammates remind us once more of the selfless service that allows our nation to stay strong, safe and free."
