Corvette Memphis Club Exec In Custody

Fugitive surrenders after standoff
By Jody Callahan
At about lunchtime Wednesday, Bartlett police officers called the U.S. Marshals Office in Jackson, Tenn.
Someone had phoned a tip in to Bartlett Crimestoppers, saying that fugitive Joe Caronna -- wanted on first-degree murder charges in the death of his wife, Tina -- was hiding out in a Howard Johnson motel in Jackson. Bartlett police wanted some help in apprehending the man who'd been on the run for weeks.
So the marshals scrambled their team while alerting the Jackson police. Joined by Bartlett officers, the phalanx descended onto the two-story motel just off exit 85 of Interstate 40.
Caronna was reluctant to surrender, leading to a little drama.
"They went out there to the hotel, located him and made contact with him. He had a firearm," said David Jolley, U.S. Marshal for West Tennessee. "They had about a 15-minute standoff. They were able to talk him into laying the gun down."
Caronna was eventually taken into custody with no shots being fired and no injuries reported, Bartlett police Lt. Rory Mack said.
Tina Caronna, an executive with the local office of Cantor Fitzgerald and president-elect of the Corvette Memphis Club, was last seen leaving her Countrywood home on Eatonwick on the morning of Oct. 25.
Friends and authorities searched for her until her black Chevrolet Avalanche was found two days later parked on Brannick Drive, a one-block, dead-end street near Elmore and Summer.
Her body was in the vehicle covered with beach towels and her mouth was duct-taped shut. The Medical Examiner's Office determined that she died of asphyxiation.
Although Caronna had been a suspect in his wife's murder, the arrest warrant wasn't issued until March 8.
That touched off a widespread manhunt for him, leading to rumors and fruitless sightings until Wednesday's tip.
