The National Hurricane Center has announced that a tropical depression has formed off the coast of Africa. Officials believe it will strengthen and if it does, it will become the first named storm of the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane season. Her name will be Ana.
At 11:00 a.m., the depression was moving to the west at 11 mph and was 3,444 miles off the coast of North Carolina. Winds were sustained at 30 mph. The current forecast from the National Hurricane Center has the storm still over 1500 miles off the coast with sustained winds of 50 to 60 mph by sunrise Sunday. It's too soon to tell where she would make landfall if she becomes a Hurricane or Tropical Storm, but weather models forecast the system would head in a more northwesterly track potentially toward the Bahamas, the U.S. East Coast and possibly the Gulf of Mexico. Stay tuned for updates.
