NYC Band Menya Releases Mixtape Free!

"Pumpin' up the volume with The Sleepover Series" (Vol. 1) is scheduled for release on October 23

The beat-dropping New Yorkers known as Menya are back on October 23rd with the release of their mixtape, The Sleepover Series (Vol. 1), a 12-song party mix featuring local artists, original tunes, and cover songs remixed the Menya way.

Menya, which consists of three undergrad students at New York University, combine electro-clash, hip-hop, and synth-pop music to make a sound that is refreshingly unique to today’s modern music industry. The new album will be available to download for free on Myspace.com/MenyaMusic.

Menya is comprised of Coco Dame (vocals), Angie Ripe (vocals), and Good Goose (production/vocals). A melting pot of different social and sexual backgrounds, the trio reaches out to multiple demographics of all ages – anyone that enjoys rhythmically charged tracks packed with high energy will enjoy the sound of Menya! The group was formed after Coco Dame and Good Goose saw M.I.A., The Cool Kids, Santigold and Spank Rock perform live (all in one night at CMJ Music Festival 2007) and became inspired to create their first song together. Angie Ripe joined the fun shortly thereafter, lending her vocals to Menya’s debut EP, The Ol’ Reacharound (May 2008). The EP was featured in various publications like Blender magazine and championed by critics such as Robert Christgau, who highlighted the EP in his best-of 2008 Dean’s List. Quickly enough, this trio of proud and passionate New Yorkers began performing live and soon churned out their Sophomore EP, Puss Coital, in December of 2008.

When asked where the name “Menya” originates from, the group explains, “Everyone makes up their own opinion! What’s your guess?” Some previous thoughts about the meaning behind “Menya” is that it is slang for a female’s menstruation cycle, is a shorter way of saying “Men – Yeah!” or that the name came to the group while they were tripping on LSD. None of these suggestions are correct, and sadly the group says that no one will ever learn the true origin of “Menya.” The world will just have to keep on guessing…

Check out what Paul Lester from the Guardian UK Band of the Day Blog has to say about the trio:

“Menya are an excitable three-piece from New York – probably why they usually have three exclamation marks after their name – who purvey a spunky, funky brand of sexed-up electro-crunk, all poppy hip-hop and potty-mouthed, half-sung, half-rapped lyrics about girl-on-girl action."
