I am sad to report the passing of DJ Mr. Magic today. He died due to a massive heart attack. His real name was John Rivas and he was one of the first DJ's in the Hip Hop industry to start his own show called "The Mr. Magic Disco Showcase" back in 1979. I was only 2 at the time. :)
According to DJ Premier's blog he had this to say about Mr. Magic:
"He paved the way for all radio stations that ever did mix shows".
He was also the co-founder to the infamous "Juice Crew" which included artists like MC Shan, Craig G, Biz Markie, Roxanne Shante, Kool G. Rap, Masta Ace and Big Daddy Kane!! Legendary is all I can say and he will be truly missed!
