Blkurbantimes writer, BettyBoopBBW, said to "Expect Hot performances, unexpected winners, and a lot of "Thanking God" at this years 2009 BET music awards and she was right.
"As Real As It Gets," should have been the theme for tonight's 2009 BET music awards because the show was undeniably a hit. Don't forget to watch the video of Ice Cube at the awards at the end of the story.

Hip hop heavyweights were all in attendance and the winners roster read like a whose-who of the hip hop industry from old school to new.
Young Jeezy and MC Chuck D. presented former N.W.A member Ice Cube with the "I Am Hip-Hop award." An intro video with a voice over by beats maestro, Dr. Dre that went like this, "From that first rhyme he spit for me, I knew Cube was a star." Truer words have never been spoken. Cube has blazed a trail from Hip Hop to the silver screen and transformed himself into one of our best-selling actors. He's phenomenal.

Fonzworth Bentley and the New Boyz announced Drake as "Rookie of the Year" and he certainly earned his award with the popularity of his “So Far Gone,” mixtape.
DJ AM was honored as DJ of the Year, posthumously. AM (Adam Michael Goldstein) was found dead in his NYC apartment almost two months ago. He was a frequent collaborator with Travis Barker of Blink-182 and a former member of the rock band Crazytown. The New York City Medical Examiner cited "acute intoxication" due to the combined effects of cocaine, oxycodone, hydrocodone (Vicodin), Ativan, Klonopin, Xanax, Benadryl and Levamisole (a drug used to cut cocaine) as the cause of death.

Busta Rhymes accepted the award for the deceased DJ saying, "I'm honored to accept this." Rhymes also saluted his recently deceased personal DJ, Roc Raida along with 1980's radio DJ, Mr. Magic who also passed away recently.
Old school veterans, Kid 'N Play performed their hit "Rollin' With Kid and Play" replete with their signature dance. Sounds like this night just got better and better with a stand down performance by ATL's very own Gucci Mane who performed several times with throughout the show with Mario then Soulja Boy and then OJ Da Juiceman. He ended with Wale as they performed the stage debut of "Pretty Girls."

The audience was treated to a surprise finale when old school hip hop vets, Goodie Mob appeared on stage together for the first time in nearly a decade. They sang renditions of their classic hits "Cell Therapy" and "Get Rich to This." The duo had the entire audience singing along.

Snoop Dogg debuted his new single "Gangsta Luv" featuring The-Dream then signed off with his "Gin and Juice" hit. He was also a multiple stage presence during the show.
Another show-stopper was Eminem. His performance included Black Thought and Mos Def. Eminem spit lyrics that addressed everything from sex to Barack Obama. Sounds like an amazing evening, mi gentes. I can't wait for the televised version.
Mike Epps hosted the event and did a short stand-up routine as only he can. He clowned everybody from Lil Mama to Snoop Dogg. DJ Khaled served as the show's MC while DJ Drama dee-jayed.
