BREAKING NEWS: Top Ten Sports Web Sites Announced

APSE named NYDailyNews.com one of top 10 newspaper sports sites! Theblackurbantimes sends congrats to the New York Daily News staff!

New York Daily News online wins spot on first-ever APSE top 10 newspaper sports Web sites list

Picking up the Daily News has always meant getting the best sports coverage in town. Now, it's official: we're just as good online as we are in print.

Saturday the Associated Press Sports Editors announced their first-ever Top 10 sports newspaper Web sites, and the Daily News was on the list.

"The judges came away very impressed by the efforts evidenced on the day we randomly selected," said Gerry Ahern, assistant managing editor for Yahoo! Sports. "From microsites for specific local teams and sports, to video, to blogs, to live chats, to breaking news, the editors clearly understand the importance of not only drawing, but trying to engage their audiences.

"Getting down to a top 20 in each category was very difficult. There's a lot of great work being done."

At The News, that work is done by senior managing Web sports editors Andy Clayton and Matt Marrone, night Web sports editor James Parziale and Web editors Matt Caputo and Lia Eustachewich, who are responsible for getting all of the Daily News' award-winning sports content from paper to pixels on a daily basis.

In addition, nydailynews.com is home to blogs by each of the beat writers following the teams, as well as the multisport blog The Bitter Bill, by associate night sports editor Bill Price, and the all-encompassing baseball blog Touching Base.

The News' Web site also features photo galleries, weekly power rankings of the major sports and exclusive video content. It's also New Yorkers' go-to site for breaking sports news.

"It's our goal to provide the smartest, timeliest, most insightful sports coverage anywhere on the Web," said nydailynews.com executive editor Scott Cohen. "By teaming the Daily News' award-winning reporters, writers and columnists with the best tools of the Internet - blogs, video, Twitter, live chats, interactives, polls, photo galleries - we think we've found a winning formula. It's about information and service, not gimmicks."

And now that the Daily News, which has won numerous APSE Top 10 section awards under the direction of sports editor Leon Carter, has been recognized among the country's best sports sites, the challenge is now to stay on top - not for the glory, but for the benefit of our readers.

"Thanks to the APSE for the recognition, to the nydailynews.com staff for all their hard work, and most of all, to our readers for their support," Cohen said. "We look forward to an incredible 2010 - especially if the Knicks get LeBron."
