At 6:03 a.m. (EST) a 6.1 aftershock hit Haiti. The story was originally reported by WPIX/Channel 11 News (NYC)

Just after first light, the 6.1 aftershock, centered 26 miles west-northwest of Jacmel, Haiti, the capital of the south eastern part of the French colony Saint-Domingue and 25 miles south of Port-au-Prince, rocked the already shattered Caribbean nation as thousands of people still slept in the streets after the initial monstrous 7.0 earthquake that hit last week. Reports on damage or injuries have not been released.

The aftershock is the strongest to have hit Haiti and has officials worried that already weakened structures, which have been serving as shelters for some, will completely topple adding to the woes of Haitians already in the throes of despair as they await much needed supplies.

Word of looting frenzies and violence has spread and has officials concerned for the safety of aid workers. In addition to looting and violence, debris littered streets have also delayed aid from reaching areas in Port-au-Prince.
