A man found dead behind the wheel of his car last week was Dewey Tucker, bassist for hip-hop star and former Fugee lead singer, Lauryn Hill of South Orange, New Jersey.

California police believe that Tucker, 24, was headed for a music session in Oakland, California when he was shot in a random act of violence as he drove West on Interstate 80 near Cummings Skyway between Crockett and Hercules.

Sgt. Trent Cross of the Solano County California Highway Patrol said ”The victim was leaving his home in Vallejo and was heading to Oakland for band practice. What’s very disheartening is someone has clearly shown a wanton disregard for human life, and it’s imperative that we find them as quickly as possible. We’re asking for the public’s help in helping us find the shooter,” said Cross."

Sometime after 9:50 PM, on January 12, a 911 call was placed reporting a one-car accident on Interstate 80. The caller stated that a White Nissan Sentra had struck the center median, then the guardrail and that the vehicle appeared to have been shot "multiple times."

When police arrived, they found the vehicle on the westbound side of I-80 with Tucker behind the wheel, dead of a single gunshot wound to the head.

"He was an outgoing young man who lived to play music good," said his parents.

Musician, Blyss, who described the talented bassist as a "low-end" comrade, said Tucker was a member of the Kev Choice Ensemble as well as bassist for The Coup who once shared the stage with Chico Debarge, Martin Luther and many other musicians.

"What I have learned is that life is short. Be grateful for every moment," said Blyss.

Police found two shell casings at the scene so they believe a semi-automatic handgun was used in the shooting and that the shooter or shooters were also driving west on the Interstate. CHP officers are investigating leads, though no suspects have been announced.

Tucker, who had no known criminal record or gang affiliations, was a member of the Greater St. Paul Baptist Church band in Oakland and described by police as being "an upstanding citizen."

Approximately 35 members of Tucker's family attended a news conference held after Tucker was found where police released details of the shooting and asked for the public's help in finding a suspect.

Tucker is survived by his parents and fiancée.
