Four-time heavyweight boxing champion, 47 year-old Evander "The Real Deal" Holyfield stands accused of beating third wife, Candi Holyfield at their Fayette County, Georgia home on February 1.
Candi Holyfield claims the boxing champ hit her in her face, her back and the back of her head during an argument that began over her refusal to show Evander Holyfield check stubs of payments she made to their church.
Apparently, Evander Holyfield was concerned that his wife was not giving money or enough money to their church. According to Fayette County court records, wife Candi, 30, stated that Evander Holyfield thought she was "being disrespectful." He told his wife that she needed to "start putting God first in her life."
However, in the protective order, Candi Holyfield said that the abuse against her began about six months after she and the champ were married in July 2003, and then again during her pregnancy with their first child. She said at first it was "mainly emotional" abuse but physical incidents began escalating during 2008 when Evander Holyfield choked her in front of their daughter and a housekeeper and that he threw a bottle of water at her recently.
In a statement released by the Holyfield's publicist Candi Holyfield referred to her husband as a "great man and father." It went on to say, "Our current situation should in no way be considered a reflection of his (Evander Holyfield) character. I have been with this man for nine years and will be the first to say that he has many qualities and characteristics that I admire and respect. We are all human. No one is perfect. We remain a strong married couple," said Candi Holyfield.
