An early morning fire in Hawthorne was brought under control by the quick response of the fire department after the residents of the home managed to telephone 9-1-1 around 4:30 a.m.
One of the tenants smelled a strange odor and after searching the outside of the home, noticed black smoke billowing from the second floor windows in the back and front of the 8th Avenue home.
None of the tenants were injured during the fire, but the pet bird of one tenant, a macaw, died in the fire.
The fire department arrived and extinguished the blaze, which caused heavy smoke and water damage to the basement and first floor of the home.
Investigators do not know what caused the fire to begin and it is currently under investigation by the fire marshal and the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.
