An East Orange Police Officer was arrested for burning his 2002 Cadillac Deville, which was found on Rich Street in Irvington, in an attempt to scam his insurance company out of money, say police. The plan was foiled after the fire failed to completely burn the car.

Officer Kareem Spence, 34, was arrested at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday after an investigation into the May 2009 fire
uncovered towels soaked in gasoline inside of the vehicles trunk. The Irvington Fire Department suspected arson and immediately notified investigators from the prosecutor’s office arson task force vehicle fire initiative, which handles claims of insurance fraud.

Officials called Officer Spence to the East Orange police station under the guise of having a departmental hearing, but instead had hm placed under arrest upon arrival.

Spence, of South Plainfield, who had been on sick leave since November, was charged with aggravated arson, attempted theft by deception and insurance fraud. If convicted of the charges, Spence could spend up to 25 years in prison. His bail was set at $25,000.
