Residents in Several Jersey Counties Get Extension from IRS

Residents in Atlantic, Bergen, Cape May, Essex, Gloucester, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, and Union counties have received a postponement from Uncle Sam on filing income tax returns after officials deemed the counties Federal Disaster Areas after the severe storms and flooding devastated the areas.

The Internal Revenue Service has extended the deadline for residents living in the aforementioned counties, including individuals with businesses in the above counties until May 11.

The extension includes the April 15 deadline for filing 2009 individual income tax returns, 2009 contributions to an individual retirement account (IRA) and making income tax payments.

Taxpayers in the counties declared federal disasters have automatically been identified by the IRS and applied automatic tax filing and payment relief.

If an affected taxpayer does receive a penalty notice from the IRS, the individual should call the telephone number on the notice immediately and have the agency abate any interest and any late filing or late payment penalties assessed against them.

Penalties or interest will be abated only for taxpayers who have an original or extended filing, payment or deposit due date, including an extended filing or payment due date, that falls within the Postponement Period.

If you need to register for federal disaster aid, please do so by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362) or go online to www.disasterassistance.gov.

Residents and business owners should know that even if they had flood insurance, some of their losses may not be covered. FEMA asks that you call them to learn what losses may or may not be covered.

Registrants should have the following information available: address and phone number, Social Security number, current mailing address, date the damage occurred, address of the affected property, brief description of the damages, insurance information, family's gross income.
