The Indonesian Meteorological and Geophysics Agency has now said that the earthquake that rattled the southeastern Asian nation of Indonesia Tuesday evening triggered two tsunamis.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center added that sea level measurements have now indicated that tsunami waves "may have been destructive along coasts near the earthquake epicenter."

It was initially reported that if the quake triggered a tsunami, it would not be big enough to cause any significant damage. Scientists registered one tsunami measuring close to a foot from peak to trough, but have said it was small.

Officials announced tsunami warnings immediately after the 5:55 pm quake struck, but lifted the warnings approximately two hours later.

The USGS initially reported the depth at which the trembler struck at 19.3 miles. Updated reports now place it at 28.6 miles.

A 9.1-magnitude underwater earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra in December 2004, triggering a tsunami that devastated 14 countries and claimed the lives of more than 200,000 people.

The tsunami obliterated communities and caused nearly $10 billion in damage. Indonesia was among the hardest hit nations.

The 7.7 magnitude quake, which lasted for about three minutes, has not produced reports of significant damages, injuries or deaths at this time.
