BLAST! Worthy: Did Black Soldiers Start Memorial Day?

I found a fascinating piece of information recently that I thought you'd want to know. I am not a historian, but according to some, evidence shows that the first Memorial Day was started May 1865 - 145 years ago this month - by formerly enslaved Africans in South Carolina.

And with respect to all the men and women who lost their lives while in military service to this country, let us remember the spirit and essence of Memorial Day (which is more than just about a three day holiday weekend).
