Two West Memphis police officers making a routine traffic stop off of Interstate 40 were shot and killed Thursday morning.

West Memphis police chief, Bob Paudert confirmed that one of the dead officers is his son, Brandon. The other officer who was killed is Bill Evans.

The bloody rampage began around 11:40 a.m. when Paudert and Evans stopped a white minivan with Ohio license plates traveling east on Interstate 40 near Airport Road. The occupants of the minivan fired upon the officers. One officer died at the scene, the other was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Crittenden County sheriff's deputies assisting in the search of the suspects came across the white minivan in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter at 798 West Service Road in West Memphis.

The suspects and deputies exchanged fire before both deputies were wounded by the suspects assault rifle gunfire. Responding deputies later shot and killed the suspects.

One of the injured deputies, Crittenden County Sheriff Dick Busby, has been listed as being in serious but stable condition at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis.

The other injured deputy has been identified as W.A. Wren. His condition is listed as critical.

Statements issued by Governor Mike Beebe and Senator Blanche Lincoln extended condolences to the families of the fallen officers.

“Just last week, ceremonies across Arkansas were held to remember fallen law-enforcement officers and remind us of the dangers they face on a daily basis," Beebe said in the statement. "That reminder was tragically reinforced today in Crittenden County ... This is a loss shared by all Arkansans.”

"Along with all Arkansans, I recognize the courage, bravery, and dedication of our Arkansas law enforcement officers, who risk their lives each day to keep our citizens safe," Lincoln said in her statement. "We must honor and remember these law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, as well as the family members, friends and fellow officers they left behind. I thank these public servants for their service and sacrifice.”
