Union City Man Impersonates Juvenile During Arrest

A Union City man has been arrested by Township police for giving arresting officers false information after they booked him for breaking into cars several weeks earlier.

Lt. Frank Cannella told The Record that Luis Riofrio-Arias pretended to be a juvenile when he was arrested and then gave a variation of his surname in order to hide his true age.

Riofrio-Arias, who told police he was 17 years old, was charged with burglary and theft along with two other juveniles on April 23. The hoax came to an end when another officer, who had arrested Riofrio-Arias on a domestic violence incident previously, noticed that Riofrio-Arias had been booked under the fake name and birthdate.

The sneaky car burgular was released into the custody of his sister, who police are investigating to see if she knew of her brother's dastardly identity deed when she signed for his release.

Cannella said that when Riofrio-Arias appeared at the municipal courtroom on Tuesday for the domestic charge, he was slapped with obstruction and hindering arrest charges as well. Bail was set at $10,000 with no 10 percent option.
