An NYPD sergeant and officer have been suspended after a 46-year-old man hanged himself using a string from a pair of shorts he was wearing while in a holding cell at the 90th precinct in Brooklyn.
Police say the man had been booked on domestic violence charges Sunday and placed in a holding cell. Sometimes after 8:15 p.m. he was found dead, a man identifying himself as the prisoner's brother told the NY Post.
The NYPD has refused to identify the man or say how much time had passed since the 47-year-old man was last checked on when he was found dead.
The suspended officers have not been identified, but a police source said officers are required to check on prisoners every 30 minutes.
"I don't understand why he would do something like this, he has four children. I know for a fact he would never do anything like this to himself," the man's brother said. "I cried after I heard the news and I came here what exactly what happened to my brother."
