A Navy base in Manchester Township was locked down for an hour Monday after base military police received report of shots fired near one gate and a delivery driver was found carrying a gun at another gate aboard the Naval Air Engineering Station at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

The Burlington County Times reported that Base spokeswoman Angel Lopez told the Associated Press that two incidents prompted security forces to lock the base down. The first incident
occurred at one of the gates that lead aboard the Naval base.

A delivery driver was detained by naval police at the gate after he told them that he carrying a gun for personal protection. The unidentified man was issued a ticket and released.

While police were winding up the gun incident, someone reported hearing what sounded like gunfire at another gate. Base officials immediately locked the base down preventing anyone from entering or exiting all gates. After an extensive search, Lopez said officers did not find any sign that a gun had been fired and believe the report was unfounded.

The Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst officially merged with Fort Dix and McGuire Air Force base in October 2009. Lakehurst is the world's only provider of full spectrum support for aircraft launch, recovery and support equipment systems for U.S. deployed ships, the Marine Corps Expeditionary Forces ashore and Allied Naval Aviation Forces.

Despite it's Lakehurst name, the naval base main gate is situated in Manchester Township with the majority of the base lying in Jackson Township.

Lakehurst Naval Air Station was the site of the horrific Hindenburg explosion that occurred on Thursday, May 6, 1937. The German made LZ 129 passenger airship caught fire and exploded as it tried to dock with its mooring mast at the base. The fire claimed the life of one person on the ground and 35 of the 97 people on board.
