Visitors enjoyed free ice cream, beverages and promotional giveaways while touring the new state-of-the-art Madison Police headquarters, a step-up from its primitive archaic police station at 50 Kings Road.
The open house event, sponsored by the Madison Police Department and the Policemen’s Benevolent Association (PBA) Local 92, was held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and offered a view of law enforcement vehicles displayed in the parking lot.
The tour included holding cells, an interpretation of police procedures and a brief history of the Madison Police Department. The old facility and the new meld amiably as old photos and documents hang from the walls, narrating the history of the Madison Police Department.
Along with it's neighbor, the Madison Fire Department, the new Madison Police Department, situated in the two-year-old, $10.2 million Madison Public Safety Complex, houses one of the most advanced law enforcement communication centers in the State. The communication room inside the station is packed with computer monitors with many showing different areas of the Borough of Madison in real time.
"We have the most advanced communication center in Morris County and we can respond to a crisis at a moment’s notice. We have the capability to track law enforcement personnel anywhere in Madison as they are riding in their patrol vehicles and pinpoint an area of interest with the push of a button," Communications officer Joe Mittermaier told the AlternativePress.com.
Officer Joe Longo, a five year veteran of the Madison police department, told the Alternativepress.com that the tour was a way for members of the community to meet officers while getting an up close and personal view "at what their tax dollars [are spent on]."
"This is a way to build a relationship with the public and business owners and educate them on law enforcement procedures," Longo said.
