It's probably the only Subway Restaurant in the U.S. with one of the most breath taking views -- 26 stories above ground. The Subway Restaurant in Manhattan, subcontracted by the company installing all of the structural steel in the Freedom Tower at Ground Zero allows construction workers to take their lunch breaks without having to leave the sky, so to speak.
Ironworker John McGowan, 45, had been spending most of his lunch break traveling until the Subway in the sky restaurant arrived. Now, he and co-workers can enjoy their entire lunch breaks while they take in the sights from the 26th floor of the soon-to-be freedom tower located at One World Trade Center.
The makeshift Subway shop was built from shipping containers and rests upon Freedom Tower scaffolding 26 stories above Ground Zero with the help of a hydraulically powered platform.
Water waste from the restaurant is boiled away with an evaporation system, and solid trash is composted with the help of sky-high worms while water and supplies are brought up with the help of cranes.
Ryan Sabio, 30, told the New York Post he's glad for the upward commute to his job making sandwiches, when he gets to hobnob with the people building the much-awaited landmark.
"It's a little trip getting here, most obviously. But it feels good at the end of the day to serve these guys,'' he said. "I feel like I'm filling in, somewhat, a part of history here.''
The 1,776-foot signature skyscraper is scheduled to be finished by 2013. A second office tower under construction at the moment will serve as a transit hub and a Sept. 11 memorial on the 16-acre site.
