Three men have been detained by Moore County Sheriff's Deputies Tuesday in connection with an armed robbery and shooting at the Exxon Short Stop Food Mart at the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 and Camp Easter Road in Lakeview that injured three people Monday.
WRAL reported that Moore County Sheriff Lane Carter says store clerk, Grace Kelly, 75, her husband, Angus G. Kelly, 78, and one of the suspects were shot during the robbery. The men in custody are Leroy Medley, 20, of 1193 W. Indiana Ave. in Southern Pines; Demarcus Dennison, 18, of 572 School St. in Polkton; and Randy Williams, 17, of Southern Pines.
Grace Kelly returned to the crime scene with a bandage around her arm after she was treated and released from Moore County Hospital, then then drove herself to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where her husband was undergoing surgery. Angus Kelly was listed in fair condition. Williams was also treated at Moore Regional Hospital for a gunshot wound to his face.
According to police, Angus Kelly went to the store to pick up his wife, as he always does and walked upon the robbery in progress. When he noticed what was going on, he took a shotgun from his jeep and fired a shot through the store window, shooting Williams in the face.
One of the men fled the store, while the other two suspects grabbed Grace Kelly for cover in order to get out of the store. That’s when police say, the suspects and Angus Kelly exchanged gunfire that injured Angus Kelly when he was shot twice in the side and his wife being shot in the arm.
When police arrived at the scene, they launched searches by ground and air in conjunction with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. Heat-seeking imaging from the helicopter helped locate two suspects near some railroad tracks behind the store, according to WRAL.com.
The apprehension and interviews of those two suspects led to the arrest of a third suspect at a residence in Southern Pines, police said. The fourth man, the getaway driver, escaped in a dark blue SUV. His identity has not been released. Police say the suspects may be responsible for three, possibly four, armed robberies from Moore County to Charlotte.
Medley, Dennison and Williams have all been charged with two counts each of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and one count each of first-degree kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon. Medley and Dennison were being held Tuesday in the Moore County Detention Center under $250,000 bonds.
