A Virginia mother and three children survived an early morning fire in Jamesburg that claimed the life of the mother of one of the children.

Deputy Chief Dwayne Fitzpatrick told 1010wins.com that the 12:20 a.m. blaze, which had fully engulfed the home on Gatzmer Avenue in Jamesburg by the time firefighters arrived, is still under investigation.

A neighbor told 1010wins.com that she saw one of the women in the house hanging from an attic window, carrying a soot-covered baby boy.

"A man came up and climbed on the roof over their doorway and she handed the baby out to the man," the neighbor said. Then, she says, the woman, Jayme Lowenberg, either jumped or fell three stories trying to reach the rooftop but missed. She later died of her injuries.

Michelle Gonzalez, 25, of Triangle, Va., was in “very critical” condition at Raritan Bay Medical Center’s Old Bridge division, her stepmother, Mary Horvath told NJ.Com.
“We really need a miracle,” said Horvath.

The three children who survived the fire are, 2-year-old Alyssa Gonzalez, her 11-month-old brother, Adam Gonzalez, and their 10-month-old cousin, Derrick Lowenberg. All three are in critical, but stable condition at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.

28-year-old Lowenberg, a teacher in Hillside, was the mother of baby Derrick and the owner of the Gatzmer home. Her sister, Michelle Gonzalez was visiting from Virginia with her two children when the fire broke out Saturday morning.

Lowenberg's husband, George Lowenberg was in Virginia at the time of the fire.

Friends of the Lowenbergs, including Jeremy Ippolito, have banned together to set up a charitable account for the Lowenberg and Gonzalez children. Ippolito said he would open the account at Jamesburg's TD Bank branch this week.

He invited those who want to contribute to contact him at humanshelphumans@aim.com.
