Those of you with land line and cellular phone service through Verizon wireless probably found yourselves dumbfounded when you were unable to make or receive call today.
Like AT&T customers, who found themselves with no service last week, Verizon customers in parts of Manhattan -- on the East side of Manhattan between 20th and 40th Streets-- fell victim to no cell service because of a malfunction in Verizon's network.
Verizon spokesman John Bonomo told the Associated Press that while they cannot be sure how many of their customers have been affected, they do know that the problem is the result of a piece of equipment called the digital cross-connect. The problem is mainly affecting voice service on landlines, but cell phones are affected as well because they connect through the wired network.
Verizon staff and the vendor who manufactures the digital cross-connect are on site working on to correct the problem, Bonomo said and hopes have service restored to affected customer by this afternoon.
