Jersey City University Employee Arrested For Theft

A Jersey City woman employed as the officer manager at the Jersey City University was arrested by the New Jersey State police and charged with pilfering more than $167,000 from the Student Government Organization, Attorney General Paula Dow announced last week.

Shaunette P. Ruffin-Moody, 48 managed the Student Government's account, which procures about $600,000 a year in student fees. The money is used to pay for student related activities and athletic events, The Jersey Journal reported.

State Criminal Justice Director Stephen Taylor told WABC News that Ruffin-Moody issued 80 unauthorized checks from the SGO's checking account to herself and her husband, forging the signature of an associate dean who was required to sign the checks.

Investigators allege that between July 2008 and December 2009, Ruffin-Moody issued 73 of those checks to her husband, which totaled $151,962.23 and seven to herself totaling $16,010. Her salary was paid from the very fund she stole from.

Ruffin-Moody’s theft was uncovered in July 2009 after several checks bounced and the shameless office manager reported the Student Government Organization had exceeded its budget. School officials immediately suspended her.

Ruffin-Moody has been charged with second-degree theft by deception and was being held at the Hudson County Jail in Kearny in lieu of a $150,000 bond. Her attorney, Alan D. Bowman, did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment from WABC news.
