JetBlue Flight Attendent: 'You Can't Fire Me, I Quit!'

The JetBlue flight attendant who told off a rude passenger, quit his job and copped a beer before sliding down the plane's emergency chute to peace and serenity is adamant that the airline did not fire him, because he resigned, his attorney told The New York Post.

JetBlue said that Steven Slater was no longer an employee at JetBlue Airways Corp., but did not release any further details, which sparked online speculation that the 20-year airline veteran had been fired.

Slater, 38, was suspended following his in-flight meltdown after he was insulted by an unruly passenger during a flight from Pittsburgh, Pa to John F. Kennedy International Airport on August 9. He was later arrested and charged with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and trespassing. His next court date is Tuesday, September 7.

In a memo, executives told employees that "press coverage" was not taking into account how much harm Slater could have caused by deploying the aircraft's emergency chute, which deploys with a potentially deadly amount of force.

Slater's attorney Daniel J. Horwitz said he and Slater were still working out some details with the Queens-based airline but wouldn't elaborate further on what those details were.

It is not clear whether Slater, who worked for JetBlue for three years, would seek future employment in the airline industry.
