A Vailsburg homicide claimed the life of a South Orange resident described by a friend as a "generous and kind" man, The Maplewood Patch reported.

Newark police, responding to an automatic gunshot detection call around 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, arrived at 40 Salem Street where they found 27-year-old Barron Weir lying in the middle of the street suffering from gunshot wounds to his chest and torso, said Newark police department spokeswoman Detective Josephine Santaniello. The incident occurred just two miles from Weir’s suburban South Orange home, The Star-Ledger reported.

Weir, a 2001 graduate of Columbia High School, was transported to University Hospital where he expired a short time later, Deputy Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Squad announced in a press release.

The victim was employed at a day care center as a summer counselor, according to the Star-Ledger. His former college sweetheart, Dominique Smith said Weir loved children and hoped to one day have his own.

Weir graduated from Hampton University in 2005 where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He was an avid tennis player and loved cars as much as friends and family loved him. Smith, 27, of Cincinnati, Ohio said Weir was about "being a better man."

"He was strong in his convictions," said Smith. "You either loved him or hated him."

Investigators have not identified a motive or any suspects at this time, but the investigation continues. Acting Essex County Prosecutor, Robert Laurino urges anyone with information to call the Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Tips line at (877) 847-7432.
