News Channel 36 has reported that a Waxhaw, North Carolina pre-school child has died of injuries she sustained after being attacked by two pit bulls on Wednesday.

The child and her grandmother were reportedly attacked around 11 a.m. in the front yard of their home on Rehobeth Road in Waxhaw, small community approximately 20 miles from Charlotte, NC.

A relative of the child, 5-year-old McKayla Woodard, told a WBTV reporter that the little girl was mauled after she tried to run into a yard adjacent to her grandmother's home. The dogs began attacking the grandmother as she attempted to protect the child. The relative added that "Rebel", one of the pit bulls involved in the vicious attack, "tended to run the street."

Woodard was bitten on her neck several times and transported to Carolinas Medical Center-Union in Monroe where she later died of her injuries. Her grandmother, whose name was not released, remains in serious condition, according to WBTV.COM

Investigators, who told the news it was not immediately clear how the pit bulls got loose to end up in the family's yard, said the pit bulls were later captured and euthanized.
There is no word yet if the owner of the marauding dogs will face criminal charges for Woodard's death or the grandmother's injuries.
