Students look to iconic image to unite community behind strained
school.

April 5, 2011, New York, New York- Rice High School’s graduating class
of 2011 will gather together Thursday April 7th to both memorialize the
time spent in the hallowed halls, and to galvanize support and garner
attention to the economic plight of their beloved Alma Mater.
Rice’s graduating class have chosen to recreate the iconic “A Great Day
in Harlem” photo as the 2011 yearbook cover in homage to the spirit of
unity of Rice and it’s place in the surrounding Harlem community.
Students and alumni will meet on Thursday April 7th 2011 at 2:30pm at
Rice High School and head to take the photograph at the site of the
original shoot 17 West 126th Street.

Christian Fernandez of FSD Productions is the man behind the Rice High
School recreation of the Art Kane’s 1958 “A Great Day in Harlem” photo
literally and figuratively. Fernandez, a photographer and himself Rice
HS graduate returned to his alma mater this year to teach photography
after school to the students and assist with creating the yearbook.
“Rice has always been close to my heart because of the brotherhood and
family like feel” affirms Fernandez “As a member of the alumni I feel it
is important to pass on the Rice traditions that were passed on to me.
Being responsible, respecting myself, and treating people in a
respectable manner, holding myself to the highest level of integrity and
to empower myself to be better everyday.”

Rice High School was founded in 1938 in Central Harlem by the
Congregation of Christian Brothers. Rice’s mission is to educate young
men by developing in them qualities that will allow them to make a
difference in their families, communities, and society at large. Some
notable Rice HS graduates include Kemba Walker, currently attending
University of Connecticut whose men’s basketball team recently won the
NCAA championship. Dean Meminger, who to attended Marquette University,
was a first round draft pick by the NY Knicks and continued his NBA
career with the Atlanta Hawks. Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels, one third of
legendary hip hop group Run DMC. With a highly lauded recording career
that spanned over 2 decades RUN DMC has been named the “Greatest Hip Hop
Group of all Time” by both MTV and VH1 and was inducted into the “Rock &
Roll Hall of Fame”

With the recent grumblings of financial woes and the possibility of the
closing of the doors of his cherished Rice High School Fernandez looks
to a picture to paint a thousand words for him. "A Great Day in Harlem”
left a legacy that embodied greatness and unity in a community. My goal
is to be able to recreate that for Rice and show that we too can unite
and hold on to our legacy within the Harlem community." For more
