Poet's Corner: "Bang Bang"

*bang bang*

Hey, hey, let the shooters run
From the Motor City to Charm City
Your name on hot lead or cold steel.
The guns salute the different names,
But the epitaphs all read the same.

*bang bang*

Hey, hey, let the shooters run
From crime and justice.
The failure of due justice
Is the failure of justice for
Victim's survivors. No way to
Legislate from the bench the
Return of a slain father, and
Future grandfather. A generation's
Cycle is snipped prior to ever
Becoming aware.

*bang bang*

Hey, hey, let the shooters run!
A penny shackled and taken
Instead of the hundred dollar bill.
Wobbly king pins order you not
To snitch, because gangstas
Keep the streets safe, and drug
Lords keep the streets clean, right?

Poet's Corner: "America's Own (Tribute to Aiyana Jones)"

 I heard a song from Motown --
A Supreme ballad --
And my thoughts drift
To Aiyana Jones:
Shot by the police
In the middle of her home.
Detroit's own,
Aiyana Jones.

Just seven years old,
Sleeping with a princess
Dream in her head -- maybe.
We'll never know,
Because she was fatally
Shot in her home.
Detroit's own,
Aiyana Jones.

And the cameras were
Rolling. I'd like to see
The first 48 hours of
Her father, as he deals
With being pressed in
A puddle of his lil' girl's
Blood; in the middle
Of the home.
Detroit's own,
Aiyana Jones.

Now, memorialized in
Tragedy; immortalized
In poem.
America's own
Aiyana Jones.

By A. Jarrell Hayes

Aiyana Jones is a 7-year old girl that was shot and killed by police in the middle of her Detroit home. The police were looking for a murder suspect, but did not cared about any civilians in the home. In fact, the suspect was apprehended in the apartment above the one where Aiyana slept. The Detroit police used flashed grenades and stormed the apartment with guns ready. The scene was part of the reality TV show "The First 48 Hours." The Detroit police have yet to release the video of the encounter. Show your support and sign the petition for the release of the video at http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/aiyanajones. Thanks.

Peaches & Green Deliver Healthy Eats To Detroit Neighborhood

By Alicia Cruz
Senior writer
Theblackurbantimes

One company is making it easier for people in a Detroit neighborhood to eat healthier. Five days a week, the Peaches and Green truck arrives with Rhythm & Blues music flowing from the trucks loudspeaker and an announcement: “Nutritious, delicious. Brought right to you. We have green and red tomatoes, white and sweet potatoes. We have greens, corn on the cob and cabbage, too.”
They carry everything from bananas, grapefruit, oranges, cherries, kiwis to strawberries and the residents come out in droves to spend their money and eat healthy. The truck is reminiscent of the portable Mercado's back in Colombia that sit on the road side selling everything from fresh meat to coffee to vegetables.
The neighborhood is well-stocked with liquor stores, fast-food joints and candy stores, but only one grocery store that isn't convenient for many of the residents. many end up "grocery" shopping at the convenience stores that stock very little, if any, fresh fruit or vegetables and their prices are far from reasonable.

The lack of fresh food is a public health problem in Detroit, which has one of the nation’s highest obesity rates. Other cities also are struggling with obesity, diabetes and other illnesses tied to diets high in calories and sugar.
Like many areas in States like North and South Carolina, things are spread-out over miles which makes it tough for those without transportation to get to grocery markets with healthier foods and reasonable prices.
People eat better when it’s easy for them to get healthy foods, said Lilian Cheung, a researcher at Harvard’s School of Public Health.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently recommended improving the availability of fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods in low-income areas lacking grocery stores as part of a broad effort to curb obesity, she noted.

Peaches & Greens has community gardens, where volunteers grow greens, tomatoes and other vegetables to help stock the truck. The food also is offered at a neighborhood produce market, and organizers hope to persuade liquor stores and corner markets to stock their vegetables.
“People will buy it,” said Lisa Johanon, executive director of the nonprofit Central Detroit Christian Community Development Corp., which runs Peaches & Greens. “We’ve seen the stereotype that urban communities won’t eat healthy, and we’re seeing that isn’t true.”
The truck brings out residents like 49-year-old Gween Ensley, who lives with and cares for a 46-year-old woman kept mostly home bound by health problems including frostbitten feet. They listen for the truck’s music, and Ensley said she flags down the driver each time.
“There’s no market close to us,” said Ensley, who would otherwise have to walk more than a mile past vacant lots and abandoned homes to a store and haul back heavy bags of produce. Eastern Market, the city’s main farmers market, is even farther — 4 miles. “This is the way for the lady I take care of to get fresh fruits and vegetables,” she said.
The truck started making rounds of the 3-square-mile neighborhood last year and runs from mid-March to mid-December, since residents are reluctant to brave un-shoveled sidewalks during snowy Michigan winters. The truck is equipped with a handheld scanner to ring up purchases from food assistance recipients, who get funds transferred electronically onto a card used like a debit card.

Who Killed Tamara Greene? UPDATED 11/17/2009

Victim of a Senseless Drive-By or Something Much Worse?

3:40 a.m. April 30, 2003, on Roselawn near Outer Drive, Tamara Greene, age 27 became Detroit murder victim No. 113. Initially it appeared that the young woman was just another victim of a cowardly crimminal act, but when her name went public, this tragedy quickly turned into a politically charged soap opera.

It was reported that she danced at a party thrown at the mayor's mansion when Kilpatrick was still in office, was assaulted by the Mayor's wife when she walked in and caught Greene in her home and was later executed because she knew too much. Some say the former Mayor was involved and that there may be text messages to prove it. With all of the contradictions and twists involved with this sad mystery, no one knows what to believe. Judge for yourself: Full Story Here

UPDATE 11/17/2009
Lawyer for family of dancer gets texts
Paul Egan / The Detroit News

Detroit -- A lawyer for the family of slain exotic dancer Tamara Greene will be able to read all 36 city of Detroit text messages that federal magistrates judges have identified as potentially relevant to the family's lawsuit against city of Detroit officials, a judge ruled Monday.

Chief U.S. District Judge Gerald E. Rosen ruled that only one sentence will be redacted from one of the text messages. Otherwise, they will all be turned over to Birmingham attorney Norman Yatooma, Rosen said in a court order.

Greene, 27, who was shot to death in Detroit on April 30, 2003, was linked to a rumored party at the mayor's Manoogian Mansion in the fall of 2002. Her family is suing former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and top city and police officials, alleging the investigation into her still-unsolved killing was obstructed for political reasons.
Kilpatrick and the other defendants deny the allegation.

U.S. magistrate judges spent months poring through more than 600,000 text messages sent by city employees before identifying 36 text messages as possibly relevant. Lawyers for the city, who were given a chance to review the text messages and voice objections, argued that 35 of the 36 text messages were not relevant and should not be turned over to Yatooma.

But Rosen ruled "each of the 36 text messages should be disclosed," except for one sentence. The city is to file a sealed statement asserting that the redacted sentence is unrelated to the Greene case.

Yatooma still can't publicly disclose the contents of the text messages without the court's permission."These text messages have been long anticipated and aggressively defended," Yatooma said. "I am eager to finally review them and relieved to stop arguing over them."

Rosen also granted Yatooma's request to have six current and two former Detroit police homicide officers review the Greene homicide file, which was submitted to the court under seal.

Ex-Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick Released From Jail

By COREY WILLIAMS Associated Press Writer
Kwame Kilpatrick regained his freedom early Tuesday morning, emerging from jail after a 99-day sentence and stepping back onto the streets of the city he once ruled as mayor.

The 38-year-old Kilpatrick, about 25 pounds lighter than when he entered jail at the end of October, left the downtown Detroit facility wearing a dark suit just after 12:30 a.m. On the sidewalk, Kilpatrick stood for a long moment amid bright television camera lights, a crush of awaiting reporters and swirling snowflakes, smiling occasionally to those in the crowd who called his name and shouted: "We love you, Kwame! Detroit loves you, baby!"

Kilpatrick was rushed to a waiting blue Chevrolet Suburban, as the Democrat waved from behind tinted windows as he was whisked away as part of a multi-vehicle caravan. Kilpatrick made no statements to the media during his release, upon the orders of new defense attorney Willie E. Gary, according to the AP. "He's not bitter. He said he learned a lot," Gary said during an impromptu sidewalk news conference.

"He said this has been an experience he'll never forget, and he thinks because of it he'll be a better person." It's been more than a year since a text-messaging sex scandal started the long process that ended in Kilpatrick's arrest, plea, jailing and release.

Now, the man who quickly rose from a state representative to mayor of a city of 900,000 people simply is looking for work. Kilpatrick was expected to meet with state probation officials before heading to a job interview Wednesday with an unnamed company at an undisclosed location in Texas. His wife, Carlita, and three young sons, already have left Michigan.

A judge has ordered that he return by Feb. 9. "The job prospect is very, very, very favorable," Gary told reporters. "We want to make sure he can get, and land, the job. That's his first thing. He wants a job. That's what he is concerned about now.

He wants to get with his family, get with his kids so he can start his life again." The next five years, though, will be spent on probation and paying off the bulk of $1 million in restitution to the city. He also has had his law license revoked. If Kilpatrick lands the job in Texas, he must first get permission to transfer his probation from Michigan to that state, as reported.
